Petzl RIG® Descender
Compact descender for rope access work, designed for expert users. The RIG descender is designed to meet the needs of experienced rope access technicians who work on rope every day. Featuring an ergonomic handle that provides excellent descent control, this compact and easy-to-use descender makes your workday easier.
The AUTO-LOCK function allows users to easily position themselves at a workstation without manual operation. With increased durability, the shape of the cam limits wear. For intensive use and demanding work conditions, or simply for a long-lasting solution, the RIG is also available in a repairable version.
Key Features
- Markings and rope guide make it quick and easy to install the rope
- Ergonomic handle provides good grip and excellent descent control
- Moving side plate can be opened while the device remains connected to the harness, making it easier to pass intermediate anchors
- AUTO-LOCK system allows users to easily position themselves at a workstation without having to manipulate the handle or tie off the device
- Handle automatically switches to storage position when the rope is removed, reducing the risk of accidental snagging when carried on the harness
- Two possible descent modes: rope running over the side plate, or in the V-shaped friction channel for better control and to help keep the rope from kinking
- Can be used connected to the harness or to an anchor
- Once the rope is blocked, allows ascending in short spurts without manipulating the handle, simply by pulling the rope through the device
- Can be used to belay a lead climber using techniques used in climbing
- Reinforced protection on the rope friction zone helps prevent premature wear on the moving side plate
- Cam shape improves rope pinching and limits wear on the device
- Available in a repairable version (D021BA00 / D021BA01); replace the cam and pin using the repair kit (sold separately, D021CA00)

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the AUTO-LOCK system on the Petzl RIG actually let me do?
It lets you position yourself at a workstation without manually tying off the device or holding the handle in place, since the rope automatically blocks in the device once the handle is released. This speeds up transitions between movement and stationary work compared to a descender that requires manual tie-off every time.
What's the difference between the standard and repairable versions of the RIG?
The repairable versions (D021BA00 in Yellow, D021BA01 in Black) let you replace the cam and pin using a separate repair kit (D021CA00) when they wear out, rather than replacing the entire descender. The standard version (D021AB00) doesn't offer this repair option. Choose the repairable version if you expect intensive use or want to extend the device's service life.
Can the RIG be used for both descending and ascending?
Yes. Once the rope is blocked in the device, you can ascend in short spurts without manipulating the handle, simply by pulling the rope through, in addition to its primary descending function.
What are the two descent modes on the RIG, and when would I use each?
The rope can run either over the side plate or through the V-shaped friction channel. The V-shaped channel provides better descent control and helps keep the rope from kinking, useful for longer or more technical descents, while running the rope over the side plate offers a simpler setup for standard descents.
